How much does central heating cost?

The cost of central heating depends on whether you need a complete new system, a boiler replacement or changes to existing radiators and controls. A full installation quote should separate the heat source, radiators, pipework, controls, installation and commissioning. We quote the actual property rather than treating a bedroom count as a fixed package price.

New central heating system costs by home size

Bedroom count is a useful starting point, but it does not determine the boiler output or number of radiators. Room dimensions, insulation, glazing and heat loss matter, as do the number of bathrooms and how hot water is used. Two homes with the same bedroom count can need different systems and different installation work.

Ask for an itemised quotation for your home size. We do not publish verified whole-system price ranges by bedroom count, so the comparisons below explain what must be priced rather than presenting unsupported low and high figures. Confirm whether the quote includes VAT, removal, commissioning and any making good.

    One-bedroom home or flat
Price the actual heated rooms, available boiler position, hot-water demand and access to pipe runs. A bedroom count alone is not a radiator schedule.
    Two-bedroom home
Include the living areas, bathroom and circulation spaces, radiator sizing and whether existing distribution pipework can be retained.
    Three-bedroom home
Check heat loss room by room, simultaneous hot-water use, controls and the condition of the existing radiators and pipes.
    Four-bedroom and larger homes
Assess multiple bathrooms, storage requirements, zoning and longer pipe routes. Larger installations need a property-specific design and quote.

Per-radiator pricing: supply, fitting and relocation

A per-radiator quote should identify the radiator itself, brackets, valves, labour and any changes to the flow and return pipes. Panel size and heat output, designer finishes, towel rails and thermostatic valves affect the supply cost. Replacing a radiator in its existing position differs from adding one to a room without pipework.

Moving a radiator can require draining or isolating the circuit, extending pipes, lifting flooring and making good walls. Filling, bleeding, checking for leaks and balancing the system also form part of the work. There is no verified fixed per-radiator installation figure on this page; request an itemised price for each radiator and any shared system work, rather than multiplying a general repair rate by the radiator count.

Combi vs system vs regular boiler installation costs

A combi provides heating and hot water without a separate hot-water cylinder. Its quote depends on the chosen appliance, water supply suitability, gas supply, flue route, controls and whether it replaces another combi. Converting from a stored-hot-water system adds different work from a like-for-like replacement, including dealing with equipment that is no longer needed.

A system boiler works with a separate hot-water cylinder, so compare the cylinder, controls, associated pipework and installation as well as the boiler. A regular boiler installation can involve an existing cylinder and feed-and-expansion arrangements. Retaining compatible equipment is a different scope from renewing it. We do not publish verified installation price bands for these three configurations here, and one type is not automatically the cheapest choice for every home.

What moves the price of a heating installation?

Existing pipework is an important cost factor. Sound, suitably sized pipes may be reusable, while inaccessible, leaking or unsuitable runs may need replacement. Access through floors, occupied rooms and finished surfaces changes the labour and making-good requirements. The survey should establish what can stay and what genuinely needs changing.

Radiator upgrades, new valves, extra zones and smart controls add equipment and setup to the quote. Cleaning and treating the system may also be necessary before commissioning new equipment. Ask whether the quoted work includes testing, balancing, control setup, removal of old equipment and any electrical or decorative work, rather than assuming these are included.

If the problem is a failed boiler rather than an unsuitable whole system, a repair assessment may be the sensible first step. For planned heating and bathroom work together, explain both jobs when requesting a quote so access and scheduling can be assessed. Installation costs are separate from ongoing energy bills; fuel use depends on the property, settings and usage, not simply its bedroom count.

    Cost questions

How much does a new central heating system cost for a three-bedroom house?

We quote after assessing room heat loss, hot-water demand, radiator requirements and reusable pipework. There is no verified fixed three-bedroom system price published here; request a written quote separating equipment, labour, commissioning and VAT.

How much does central heating cost per radiator?

Radiator supply, valves, fitting and any pipe changes are priced for the chosen radiator and location. Adding or moving a radiator differs from a like-for-like replacement. Ask for an itemised quote; a general repair rate is not a fixed per-radiator installation price.

Is a combi cheaper to install than a system or regular boiler?

Not necessarily. Compare the whole scope: appliance, cylinder or tank work where applicable, pipe changes, flue, controls and commissioning. A like-for-like replacement differs from a conversion, and we do not publish verified installation price bands for these configurations here.

Do pipework and smart controls increase central heating costs?

New pipe runs, difficult access, radiator upgrades, zoning and smart-control installation can add equipment and labour. The quote should state which existing components can be reused and which upgrades are included.

How do I get a central heating installation quote?

Use our booking or enquiry service with the property location, bedroom and bathroom count, existing boiler type and planned radiator changes. We confirm the assessment arrangements and quote the agreed scope before installation.
